The Veteran Health Administration’s (VHA) Institute for Learning, Education and Development (ILEAD) provides a wide variety of professional development, education and training tools that give staff what they need to provide Veterans the best care available. In this effort, ILEAD developed two game-based learning (GBL) training modules that were recently selected to compete for various educational awards at two separate conferences.

The two non-government training conferences that will showcase the ILEAD training modules are the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) from Nov. 28-Dec. 2, and the International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare (IMSH 2023) Jan. 21-25, 2023. Both conferences are in Orlando, Florida. The game-based learning products to be featured are Virtual Reality Simulated Delirium Environment (VRSDE) for Geriatrics and Extended Care, and STROKE-Keep the Brain Alive in 45 for the Neurology and National Telestroke Program (NTSP).

The VRSDE iOS application simulates the signs and symptoms of a patient with delirium. The training audience consists of physicians and allied health professionals who provide elder care and emergency care for Veterans experiencing delirium. This firsthand virtual (visual, audial and haptic) delirium experience will engender empathy in health care professionals and provide experiential learning in the treatment of delirium.

This STROKE – Keep the Brain Alive in 45 training module provides experiential learning for all VHA employees. Front line staff will learn the seven signs of stroke by experiencing avatars having stroke symptoms in a real-world environment. Clinicians will diagnose and treat stroke victim avatars in real time, either in person, or using the VHA Telestroke program for a virtual neurologist.

ILEAD and client staff responsible for the development of the training modules are preparing to attend the conferences to showcase the products on conference floors and compete for multiple education awards.

For both training modules, learners will experience real-world clinical environments in real time on their PC, iPad or iPhone application. Learners will also receive continuing medical education credits in a variety of accreditations; all with the goal of improving the care of our Veterans.
