VA Staff Achieve New Milestone: 2.4 Million Patient Records Accessed

Many Veterans get health care both in and outside the VA health care system. Because of this, different doctors and nurses need to know how to share records and talk to each other. The Veterans Health Information Exchange (VHIE) Program Office strongly adheres to Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Douglas Collins, priorities that Veterans should have choices when it comes to their VA or non-VA health care.
One way the VA gives Veterans more choices is through electronic health information exchange (eHIE).. In 2025, eHIE tools managed by the VHIE Program Office were used more than ever before. For example, in March, VA staff accessed nearly 2.4 million Veteran patient documents from non-VA health care organizations. This is a 79% increase over March 2024. This shows the VA is making progress in providing accessible care for Veterans.
These tools help send and receive your electronic health information between VA, DoD, and non-VA providers. The more providers using eHIE means better care coordination and easier access to health care for Veterans.
In 2025, even more VA staff started using health information exchange (HIE) tools. Nearly 55,000 VA users, mostly health care providers and Office of Community Care staff, used these tools in March. This is a 22% increase from last year.
eHIE keeps growing by adding more partners and supporting more users. The VHIE Program Office focuses on educating, engaging, and supporting its use. The growth of eHIE tools and users helps the VA improve the quality of care coordination for Veterans, both inside and outside VA.
