A journey rekindled through Whole Health
Embracing the Whole Health model of care made it possible for Army Veteran Jim Branham to take control of his well-being. Now, he and his wife, Joy, are living their best life.
Jim Branham never imagined that, after a life of service, hard work, and devotion to his family, he would find himself broken in mind, body, and spirit at age 69. A proud Kingsport, TN, native, Army officer, Vietnam Veteran, farmer, and businessman, Jim had faced adversity before. But by 2014, after years of worsening pain and declining health, he could no longer walk, think clearly, or find hope.
His wife drove him to the Mountain Home Tennessee VA Medical Center as he lay flat in the back of their station wagon. That day marked a turning point. Within hours, VA clinicians gave Jim more answers and compassion than he had received in years. Soon after, he met his primary care doctor, who uncovered a long list of serious medical concerns—congestive heart failure, diabetes, prostate and bladder issues, liver trouble, and the need for a new hip. Jim was overwhelmed, exhausted, and deeply discouraged.
Despite his challenges, VA teams across cardiology, diabetes care, urology, mental health, gastroenterology, and more began stabilizing his health and helping him regain strength. Still, Jim knew something was missing. He was alive—but not truly living.
Everything changed when he was introduced to VA Whole Health
Whole Health offered Jim something he didn’t realize he needed: a partnership that focused not just on treating illness, but on restoring purpose, resilience, and self-belief. Through mindfulness, mental health, pain management, and compassionate coaching, he began to reclaim control over his body and his thoughts. Pain specialists like Shelly Silvers helped him understand pain as something he could influence rather than fear. MOVE taught him healthier eating, the importance of core strength, and even how to savor something as simple as an apple with mindful attention.
As he gained strength, Jim transitioned to physical therapy, where he learned exercises, received traction, and discovered tools like tai chi, yoga, and acupuncture. He studied nutrition to support brain function, improved his journaling, and learned techniques to quiet negative self-talk. Health and Wellness Coaching helped him set meaningful goals, and spiritual care—through classes like “What’s Your Life’s Mission?”—helped him reconnect with purpose.
Jim’s medical journey continued, including hip replacement surgery, a stroke diagnosis, cognitive evaluations, and eventually a pacemaker. But with Whole Health woven into his care, each challenge became something he could face with clarity and determination.
Living the life
Today, Jim and his wife are living the best life they’ve ever had—farming, running businesses, traveling, and honoring the goals they set together. Jim measures his recovery at more than double what it would have been without Whole Health.
Every day, he lives by four guiding words: Acceptance. Appreciation. Gratitude. Determination.
And with those, his story continues forward—strong, purposeful, and whole.
