Veteran finds strength to ride on

There was a time when Army Veteran Bob Atnip doubted he would ever get back on a motorcycle. A seasoned rider, Atnip found himself stalled out by severe back pain and the emotional toll of a divorce that ended a 34-year marriage. As he grappled with his feelings of anger and loss, Atnip’s struggles led to a crossroads: He was rarely leaving home, barely moving, and his weight had peaked at 430 pounds. But that was before a new approach to his health and well-being helped him get back in the saddle.

On the highway to Whole Health

Atnip was referred to Whole Health by the Indianapolis VA Medical Center’s Veteran’s Integrated Pain (VIP) clinic in January of 2024. It was through this referral that he met Angie Hardage, a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach. Though he was willing to give Whole Health a shot, he was admittedly skeptical. “I told [Angie] I’d try it, but I wasn’t exactly excited,” he said.

That all changed as he progressed through health and wellness coaching sessions. In completing his Personal Health Inventory and identifying his values, Atnip discovered his mission, aspiration, and purpose (MAP): to create a life of vitality in the wake of loss and chronic health challenges.

“[I] had the overall feeling that … that’s the way I’m going to be the rest of my life, and Angie showed me that, ‘No … there’s a better way. There’s more opportunities … to increase my outlook,’” he said.

He became determined to reconnect with his love of riding motorcycles, improve his health, and strengthen his relationships — despite all of life’s roadblocks. To accomplish these objectives, he had to change his thinking.  “Whole Health has redefined how I view healing,” he said. “It’s not just about addressing symptoms; it’s about creating a life that aligns with my values and aspirations.”

A feeling of solidarity

There is a strong sense of camaraderie in the motorcycle community, and the way that riders watch out for one another translates well to the Whole Health philosophy. In addition to “Coach Angie,” Atnip has found a comprehensive support system in VIP staff. Through tai chi, physical therapy, and the MOVE! program, Atnip has discovered the value of moving the body and breathing.

“They’re interested in [the big picture],” he said of his Whole Health team. “They’re continuing to ensure that I have quality care and the tools I need to use to improve.”

Atnip has also participated in the Healthy Teaching Kitchen, a VA program which teaches Veterans and their support persons about food, to help him learn how to prepare nutritious meals at home. As a result, his blood pressure, blood sugar, pain flare-ups, and weight (he has lost over 100 pounds and counting) are all down.

With the weight down, Atnip’s confidence is up! He purchased a new motorcycle last fall, started a relationship with a girlfriend who also enjoys riding, and he now serves as director for his local chapter of American Legion Riders — an opportunity he happily accepted.

Where the rubber meets the road

These days, Atnip is full throttle on Whole Health. He continues to meet with Coach Angie regularly and work toward his personal goals. With a new bike, a new girlfriend, and a new outlook on life, the road ahead is looking up.

“The impact of Whole Health on my life has been transformative,” he said. “I hope my story inspires others to take control of their health, embrace their journey, and find the peace and strength they deserve.”
