Asheville VA leads the way through Changes in Field Conditions for one Army Veteran

For one Army veteran and his family, recovery from a life-changing stroke became a mission all its own—led by determination, guided by exceptional VA care, and powered by the same spirit that once drove him to serve his country

HALT
Dad, a proud Army veteran, led a very active life, spending as much time as he could at the lake, boating, fishing, camping, grilling, and being with friends and family. That all changed in June 2024 when he experienced a series of strokes that left him paralyzed on his right side.
In an instant, he simply could not move. His legs were immobile. Fortunately, the impacts of the stroke manifested themselves as he arrived at the Asheville VA for a scheduled appointment. One minute he – and we – are vigorously marching through life. The next, we came to an abrupt halt, not knowing which way to turn.
RIGHT FACE
The five mini and one bigger stroke left dad paralyzed on his right side. He could not lift a finger, wiggle a toe, and did not recognize members of the family. We were devastated but determined to change our course, just like a military formation.
The army of medical professionals who sortied to assist dad – known to us as TEAM TOM – went into action, as fast as any involved in a military operation. Doctors, nurses, CNAs, in the ER, intensive care unit, and all wards, offices, and units in between led the charge, providing compassionate, tailored care for dad.
ABOUT FACE
The VA-led care did not end with his discharge but continued as social workers, community care representatives, his primary care team, and so many others helped navigate his rehabilitation. The VA sent dad to two facilities who acted as an extension of the thoughtful, tailored care he received in the VA. Intensive physical, occupational, and speech therapy there got dad back on his feet.
As he grew stronger, step by little step, Team Tom – the family and corps of medical professionals at the VA – prepared for what we prayed would be his eventual return home.
Team Tom’s family did not know what to expect when taking him home, but as he’d learned in the Army, we knew safety came first, and we learned to trust the VA. Rehab therapists helped us identify ways to make the house safer for him, while at the same time enabling his independence. The VA helped provide the resources and equipment we needed when he came home.
FORWARD MARCH
A year into his recovery, and the VA is still a vital part of Team Tom, continuing to guide us through our ever-changing field conditions.
Thanks to the Asheville VA and every person there who joined the ranks of Team Tom. Dad lives up to his Army unit’s familiar motto “Hell on Wheels.”
