Veterans in WNC give their VA Primary Care Providers the highest ratings in VA!

The Western North Carolina VA Health Care System is earning national recognition for its commitment to delivering exceptional care to veterans.
ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Patients rated their primary care providers No. 1 in the nation among 170 VA medical centers, based on Survey of Healthcare Experiences of Patients (SHEP) scores.
The Survey of Healthcare Experiences of Patients (SHEP), which measures veterans’ perceptions of their care, is a key indicator used across the VA to evaluate quality and patient satisfaction. The improvement highlights the dedication of primary care teams to strengthening relationships with veterans and enhancing the overall care experience.
In a message to facility leadership, Veterans Experience Office (VEO) officials commended the team’s efforts, noting the site’s performance stood out during national-level analysis used to inform Veterans Health Administration leadership and identify best practices in patient experience.
“I am incredibly proud of our Primary Care Providers here at Western North Carolina VA Health Care System for being recognized as the best in the nation by our Veterans,” said Dr. Keith Novak, chief of primary care at the Charles George VA Medical Center. “This honor is so much more than a statistic—it’s a testament to the deep compassion, dedication, and genuine care our entire team brings to the lives of those who have served our country.”
This achievement underscores the impact of continuous improvement and a shared commitment to putting veterans first. Leaders say the recognition reflects not only measurable progress but also the daily work of staff who strive to provide compassionate, high-quality care.
“I am honored to serve alongside such committed Primary Care Providers making our facility a leader in patient satisfaction across the VA. Together, we will keep striving for excellence and continue ensuring that our Veterans always receive the highest quality care they deserve,” Novak said.
