Charles George VA Medical Center 5 West staff decided to take pole position by using a racing theme to help keep the motivation and morale high during this year’s Pathways to Excellence survey. The survey window is three weeks, and began for the North Carolina medical center this week.

“There are two elements that the American Nurses Credentialing Center evaluates for designation and re-designation as a Pathway To Excellence® organization.  One is the document portion in which we tell our stories in relation to each of the Pathway standards,” Dave Przestrzelski, Western North Carolina VA Health Care System ADPCS/Chief Nurse Executive, said. “Once those documents are accepted by ANCC as passing the standards, we are scheduled for the second element, the survey of all RN’s and LPN’s and Nurse Practitioners and Clinical Nurse Specialists and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists across WNCVAHCS.”

The survey started yesterday and lasts for three weeks.  The Health Care System is required to have at least 60 percent participation. According to Przestrzelski, “ … our Councils have set a goal of 60 percent in the first three days, which is reported to leadership each Friday. Seventy Five percent of the responses need to be at the two highest scores for 21 out of the 28 questions to earn re-designation.

“It’s an exciting time because re-designation as a Pathway to Excellence organization affirms the Nursing culture and the interdisciplinary culture that all of our nurses have created,” Przestrzelski said.
