Connect with the VA through Local Community Outreach Events.

When deciding where to receive medical care for yourself or a family member, consider attending a community outreach event—the Western North Carolina VA Health Care System regularly participates in these events to help Veterans and their families navigate the healthcare system.

So far this fiscal year 2025, the WNCVAHCS has participated in over 120 community outreach and public facing events.

“Many Veterans are unaware of the care and benefits available to them, which is why we reach out to the community,” said Stacie Litsenberger, a VA occupational therapist. “Our outreach events in western North Carolina, such as those in Cherokee, Asheville, and Franklin, have proven to be effective ways to connect with members of our community.” Social Worker Jonathan Ben-Shalom explains, “These events are a collaboration of our staff and allow Veterans to connect with experts and discover the services available to them.”

VA employees from enrollment and eligibility, patient advocacy, social work, mental health, and beneficiary travel are examples of services participating in these events to provide immediate assistance.

“Veterans can enroll, check their eligibility, obtain a VA ID card, set up primary care, and schedule appointments,” says Krystal C. Hullender, a member services chief.  “We also provide resources for caregivers and family members, offering them support and information.”

The Western North Carolina VA Health Care System aims to connect with as many Veterans as possible hence, these outreach events allow VA employees to engage with Veterans and their families in a supportive environment.

“Our personal approach helps Veterans start their care journey with less stress, and we leverage insights to help them navigate the health care system,” Litsenberger concluded.
