Asheville VA employees hosted an event focused on encouraging Veterans to get tested and screened for common health issues, specifically the Fecal Immunochemical Test.

The Western North Carolina VA Health Care System hosted its first FIT Fair, an event designed to raise awareness about the importance of colon cancer screening while also connecting Veterans, caregivers, and staff with a wide range of health resources.

The event welcomed approximately 124 Veterans and caregivers and 116 staff members, bringing total attendance to nearly 240 participants.

The FIT Fair provided Veterans with information on the Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT)—a simple, at-home screening tool for colorectal cancer—while also showcasing other VA programs and services.

Attendees explored resources such as Suicide Prevention, Whole Health, Nutrition and Food Service, MyHealtheVet, Telehealth, Women’s Health, Primary Care, and Laboratory services. Each booth offered education, hands-on demonstrations, and opportunities for Veterans to engage directly with staff.

The fair aligned with the National Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention’s (NCP) Healthy Living Message: “Get Recommended Screening Tests and Immunizations.” By focusing on preventive care, the event reinforced the importance of early detection and encouraged Veterans to take advantage of VA’s wide range of health services.

Veterans left the FIT Fair with practical tools, valuable knowledge, and renewed encouragement to prioritize their health. Events like these not only increase awareness but also build stronger connections between Veterans and the services available to them.
