WADO Studio: The Healing Power of Music
By Stacie Litsenberger, Occupational Therapist
WADO Studio at the Charles George VA Medical Center is a creative space where Veterans can explore the art of music — learning to play instruments, write songs, and record their own work.
For many, it’s more than just a studio; it’s a place of connection, healing, and self-expression.
Before 2020, the VA received grants from the Asheville Area Arts Council to provide music classes for Veterans. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the program expanded, adding a wide range of musical instruments and professional recording equipment.
In 2022, WADO Studio — whose name means “thank you” in the Cherokee language — received its first contract to provide a full range of free music services for all Veterans.
At the heart of the studio is Gene Peyroux, who brings years of experience as a musician, producer, and instructor. Gene offers songwriting, instrument instruction, recording and production lessons, and sound engineering. His mentorship has inspired a remarkable collection of music created by Veterans, each piece reflecting their strength, service, and creativity.
Gene has worked with Veterans since 2011 through Guitars for Vets, a nonprofit dedicated to providing free guitar lessons and instruments to Veterans coping with PTSD. Long before that, he served as a ski instructor for Veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan — an early step in what would become his lifelong commitment to supporting Veterans through hands-on, restorative experiences.
Gene recalls several moments that capture the spirit of his work:
“While working with Veterans in the Warrior Recovery Unit, I witnessed a Vet who hadn’t been talking begin to open up and share their experiences. Seeing them go from isolation to engagement was magical — a true reminder of the healing power of music.”
“Watching folks who never considered themselves songwriters grow into talented and thoughtful artists has been one of the most rewarding parts of this work.”
“The culture at the Charles George VA Medical Center is so supportive and friendly that it makes coming to work a true joy. I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with such dedicated, talented Veterans.”
WADO Studio continues to expand its reach, offering group classes and individualized instruction across the VA campus.
