Atlanta Army Veteran Spreads Joy on World Smile Day
By Gregory Kendall, Public Affairs Specialist
On the first Friday of October, one Atlanta Veteran will pause to celebrate World Smile Day, a tradition dedicated to spreading kindness and brightening the lives of others.
This year, Army Veteran Dennis James plans to mark the day in a very special way—by sharing his own story of resilience, optimism, and the power of a simple smile.
After serving his country with honor, James continues his mission of service by lifting the spirits of those around him. Whether it’s offering encouragement to fellow Veterans during medical appointments at the Atlanta VA Health Care System, volunteering in his community, or simply greeting neighbors with a warm smile, he reminds us of all that joy can be contagious.
“Smiling may seem small, but it’s a way of showing hope, gratitude, and strength,” James said. “When I was deployed, some of the hardest days were made a little easier when someone found a reason to smile. Now, I try to do the same for others.”
World Smile Day was established in 1999 to honor the creator of the smiley face symbol. James believes that acts of kindness and smiles can help make the world a better place and embodies this message by showing that positivity is a form of resilience that can be shared widely.
