Atlanta VA Health Care System Observes Spiritual Care Week, Highlighting Holistic Wellness

By Gregory Kendall, Public Affairs Specialist

The Atlanta VA Health Care System is proud to observe Spiritual Care Week from October 19–25, 2025, celebrating the compassionate, holistic support that chaplains provide to Veterans, their families, and staff.

The 40th anniversary of this national observance, which began in 1984, carries the theme "40 Years of Spiritual Support," a message that resonates deeply within the facility.

Atlanta VAHCS Chief Chaplain Reginald Cleaver emphasized the critical role spiritual care plays in a Veteran's healing journey. “Spiritual support is a cornerstone of our Whole Health approach,” said Cleaver, who was recently appointed as the new chief chaplain. “We are here to provide a safe and confidential space for Veterans to address their spiritual, moral, and ethical concerns, which can arise from their service and in their daily lives. We recognize that true healing ministers to the whole person—mind, body, and spirit.”

This year marks a poignant milestone for the chaplain service, reflecting four decades of dedication and profound community impact across the nation. Cleaver highlights the importance of this work, noting that chaplains often address difficult questions and provide comfort to those facing trauma, grief, and other challenges.

Among those who have experienced the difference is Veteran Ramon Sims, an Army Veteran who served in the Gulf War.  Sims reflected on the value of the Atlanta VA's spiritual resources. "The VA chaplains have been a quiet but powerful force," he shared. "They help you work through the unseen wounds that service leaves behind. The peace of mind that comes from knowing you have someone to talk to, someone who understands your faith tradition or your moral injury, is a true blessing".

Atlanta VAHCS chaplains are integrated members of the Patient Care Team, participating in medical rounds, offering risk screenings, and ensuring that Veterans receive comprehensive, respectful care. Beyond inpatient support, the chaplain service also offers community connections and bereavement counseling.

This week, the Atlanta VAHCS invites Veterans and staff to learn more about these vital services. Chaplains will offer "Tea for the Soul" and "Blessing of Hands" for Veterans and staff throughout the medical center on Thursday, October 23, 2025, from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m.
