Atlanta VA Health Care System Remembers Four Chaplains Day
By Gregory Kendall, Public Affairs Specialist
On February 3, 1943, four U.S. Army Chaplains of different faith traditions made the ultimate sacrifice during World War II when their troop transport ship was sunk while crossing the Atlantic Ocean.
The chaplains were aboard the U.S.A.T. Dorchester, which was struck by a German submarine torpedo in the early morning hours of February 3, 1943, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of service members.
Eyewitness accounts describe how the four chaplains, Reverend George L. Fox (Methodist), Rabbi Alexander D. Goode (Jewish), Father John P. Washington (Catholic), and Reverend Clark V. Poling (Dutch Reformed)—gave their life jackets to others in need. As the ship sank, the chaplains were seen praying together and offering comfort to those around them, embodying unity, courage, and selfless service in the face of tragedy.
Atlanta VA Health Care System Chief Chaplain Reginald Cleaver reflected on the enduring significance of their actions. “The heroism of the Four Chaplains is an example to all of us and a model of selfless service that still retains its emotional power to this day,” Cleaver said.
The observance of Four Chaplains Day on February 3, 2026, serves as a sacred time of reflection and remembrance for military and VA chaplains who continue this legacy of service. Chaplains support Veterans and service members across all branches of the Armed Forces—including the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard—by providing compassionate care, spiritual support, and a steady presence during times of challenge and healing.
Army Veteran Denis James shared how the story of the Four Chaplains continues to resonate today. “When you hear what those chaplains did—how they put others before themselves—it reminds you what service really means,” James said. “Even years later, knowing that kind of compassion exists still gives me strength.”
Atlanta VAHCS chaplains remain a vital part of the health care team, and on this day, we proudly honor their dedication and express our sincere gratitude for the meaningful work they perform every day in service to Veterans and their families.
