May marks National Military Appreciation Month, a time dedicated to recognizing the sacrifices and service of active-duty military members, Veterans, and military families across the nation.

Established by Congress in 1999, the month includes observances such as Military Spouse Appreciation Day, Armed Forces Day, and Memorial Day, all aimed at honoring those who have served the country.

At the Atlanta VA Health Care System, National Military Appreciation Month serves as an opportunity to celebrate the courage, resilience, and commitment of Veterans who continue to inspire their communities long after their military service ends.

“National Military Appreciation Month reminds us to pause and recognize the extraordinary sacrifices made by our nation’s service members, Veterans, and their families,” said Angelyn McCrory, Chief Veterans Experience Officer for the Atlanta VAHCS. “Every Veteran who walks through our doors has a unique story of service, and it is our privilege to honor them not just this month, but every day through compassionate, Veteran-centered care.”

Army Veteran James Jones said the month carries deep personal meaning for him.

“Serving in the military taught me discipline, teamwork, and how to persevere during difficult times,” Jones said. “It means a lot to know people still appreciate the sacrifices Veterans made for this country. The Atlanta VA has helped me continue moving forward and stay connected with other Veterans.”

Navy Veteran Patricia Reed said National Military Appreciation Month is also a reminder of the bonds shared among those who served.

“When you serve in the military, you become part of something bigger than yourself,” Reed said. “This month gives people a chance to reflect on the dedication of military members and their families. I’m proud of my service, and I’m grateful for the support I’ve received from the Atlanta VA community.”

Throughout May, communities nationwide are encouraged to recognize and support Veterans through acts of gratitude, volunteerism, and outreach programs that highlight the lasting impact of military service.
