Atlanta VAHCS Honors Public Service Recognition Week
By Gregory Kendall, Public Affairs Specialist
During Public Service Recognition Week, the Atlanta VA Health Care System proudly recognizes the dedication and impact of its employees who continue to serve Veterans long after their military service has ended.
Observed annually during the first full week of May, Public Service Recognition Week highlights the contributions of federal, state, and local government employees who work tirelessly to improve the lives of others. At Atlanta VAHCS, this commitment is reflected daily in the compassionate care, innovative treatments, and unwavering support provided to more than 186,000 Veterans across Georgia.
From physicians and nurses to administrative staff and support services, employees across Atlanta VAHCS embody the spirit of public service, placing Veterans at the center of everything they do. Their work ensures that those who have served our nation receive the high-quality care and respect they deserve.
Army Veteran Denis James, who receives primary care through Atlanta VAHCS, shared his appreciation for the staff who have supported his health journey. “The people here treat you like family,” James said. “They take the time to listen, to understand what you’re going through, and to make sure you get the care you need. That means everything to me.”
Navy Veteran Mary Lewis echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the consistency and compassion she experiences during her visits. “Every time I walk into the Atlanta VA, I feel welcomed,” Lewis said. “From the front desk to my providers, everyone shows professionalism and genuine care. It’s clear they’re here because they want to serve Veterans.”
Public Service Recognition Week also serves as an opportunity to reflect on the broader mission of the Atlanta VAHCS and the essential role its workforce plays in fulfilling that mission. At Atlanta VAHCS, employees not only provide clinical care but also support Veterans through housing programs, mental health services, vocational rehabilitation, and community outreach initiatives.
As the nation pauses to recognize public servants, Atlanta VAHCS stands as a powerful example of continued service, where employees honor the sacrifices of Veterans by dedicating their careers to meeting their needs with excellence and compassion.
Through their daily efforts, Atlanta VAHCS staff demonstrate that public service is more than a profession, it is a calling rooted in respect, integrity, and a deep commitment to those who have served.
