The Atlanta VA Health Care System hosted its annual VA2K Walk & Roll event on May 20, bringing together Veterans, employees, caregivers, and community supporters for a morning focused on health, wellness and service to Veterans experiencing homelessness.
Held at the Atlanta VAHC main campus, the event encouraged participants to complete a two-kilometer walk or roll while also supporting homeless Veterans through donations of clothing and other essential items. The annual VA2K event promotes active lifestyles while highlighting the importance of community outreach and Veteran support services.
Kelly Fripps, Atlanta VAHCS Health Promotion Disease Prevention Program Manager and one of the event organizers, said the event continues to grow because it combines wellness with a meaningful mission.
“VA2K is more than just a walk,” Fripps said. “It’s an opportunity for employees, Veterans, and community partners to come together to promote healthy living while supporting Veterans who may be facing difficult circumstances. Every step taken today helps strengthen our commitment to caring for Veterans both inside and outside our facilities.”
Participants, some wearing VA2K shirts and carrying donated items, made their way around the designated walking route. Several Veterans said the event provided an opportunity to connect with fellow Veterans and Atlanta VAHCS employees while focusing on their personal health goals.
Army Veteran Eugene Hardy, who participated in the event, said he appreciates the sense of camaraderie the annual walk provides.
“It feels good seeing everyone come together for a positive cause,” Hardy said. “You’re getting exercise, spending time with other Veterans and helping people who truly need support. That’s what makes this event special.”
Angela Grant, who serves as both an event coordinator and a nurse within the Atlanta VAHCS Employee Occupational Health department, emphasized that the event underscores the significance of preventive health and maintaining an active lifestyle. “VA2K showcases how physical activity can be enjoyable, inclusive, and centered around community, all while making a tangible impact for Veterans in need,” she said.
Additionally, Grant acknowledged the contributions of Dr. Alton Greene, the third event coordinator, whose efforts were instrumental in the success of this event.
The VA2K Walk & Roll event is part of VA’s national effort to encourage healthy activity among employees and Veterans while raising awareness and donations for homeless Veteran programs throughout the country.
