On April 30, the Atlanta VA Health Care System welcomed clinicians from across the country for the National VA Women’s Health Mini-Residency, a dynamic training event focused on advancing the quality of care for women Veterans.

The specialized program combined in-person workshops, small group case-based discussions, and hands-on simulation training for breast and pelvic exams. The goal was to enhance provider competency and build confidence in delivering comprehensive, patient-centered women’s health services.

Atlanta VAHCS Women Veterans Program Manager Kathleen O’Loughlin emphasized the broader impact of the training on Veteran care.

“Women Veterans are one of the fastest-growing populations we serve, and it’s critical that our providers are fully prepared to meet their needs,” O’Loughlin said. “This residency strengthens our ability to deliver high-quality, comprehensive care while ensuring women Veterans feel seen, heard, and valued.”

Obstetrician Dr. Leah Orta Nieves, a key facilitator of the event, underscored the importance of focused, practical training for VA providers.

“This residency gives clinicians the tools and experience they need to address the unique health needs of women Veterans,” said Dr. Orta Nieves. “It’s about making sure every provider feels equipped and empowered to offer the highest standard of care.”

Nurse instructor Janet Meadows highlighted the collaborative nature of the mini-residency, noting that peer engagement played a critical role in the learning process.

“Our small group discussions allowed participants to learn from each other’s experiences and share best practices,” Meadows said. “The simulation equipment was invaluable for building practical skills, ensuring that our providers can confidently handle even the most complex cases.”

By fostering a supportive and interactive learning environment, the National VA Women’s Health Mini-Residency continues to elevate the standard of care for women Veterans. Through targeted training and shared expertise, VA clinicians are better prepared to meet the evolving needs of this growing population with both skill and compassion.
