Atlanta VAHCS Veteran Highlights Importance of Assistance Dog Week

By Gregory Kendall, Public Affairs Specialist

As Assistance Dog Week is observed from August 10–16, one Atlanta VA Health Care System Veteran hopes to shine a spotlight on the life-changing impact of service dogs in the lives of Veterans.

For Army Veteran Dennis James, his assistance dog, Atlas, is more than a loyal companion—he’s an essential partner.

After serving in Iraq, James returned home with visible and invisible wounds. Struggling with the challenges of civilian life, he was paired with Atlas through a VA-recognized service dog program. Since then, his life has transformed in ways he never thought possible.

“Atlas is not just a pet; he senses when I’m anxious and helps me stay grounded in crowded places,” James shared. “He’s not just a dog—he’s part of my recovery.”

The observance of Assistance Dog Week also highlights the work through the Puppies Assisting Wounded Servicemembers for Veterans Therapy Act (PAWS Act). The PAWS Act, enacted in August 2021, acknowledges the vital role service dogs play in Veterans' well-being. The program allows Veterans to participate in the training process, which can create a unique bond and a sense of purpose. Learn more.
