Atlanta VAHCS Veterans Honor Service and Community Ahead of Armed Forces Day

As Armed Forces Day approaches on May 16, Veterans receiving care through the Atlanta VA Health Care System are preparing to celebrate the military community in meaningful and personal ways.
For many Veterans, the observance is more than a date on the calendar; it is an opportunity to reflect on service, reconnect with fellow Veterans, and honor the sacrifices made by generations of military members.
Army Veteran Denis James plans to spend Armed Forces Day volunteering at a local community food drive alongside fellow Veterans. James, who served during Operation Desert Storm, said the day reminds him of the lifelong bond shared among service members.
“Armed Forces Day is about remembering that spirit of teamwork and service,” James said. “Even after the uniform comes off, we still look for ways to help others and support our communities.”
Navy Veteran Linda Roberts said she plans to celebrate the day by attending a Veterans appreciation ceremony with her grandchildren. Roberts, who regularly receives care through the Atlanta VAHCS, said sharing stories of military service with younger generations helps preserve an important legacy.
“I want my grandchildren to understand the pride that comes with serving your country,” Roberts said. “This day gives families a chance to recognize the sacrifices military members make every day.”
For Marine Corps Veteran Robert Mullins, Armed Forces Day will include reconnecting with former service members at a local Veterans gathering. Mullins said the camaraderie he experienced during his military service remains one of the most meaningful parts of his life.
“There’s something special about being around people who understand your experiences,” Mullins said. “Armed Forces Day reminds us that we’re never alone and that our service continues to matter.”
All three agree that observances like Armed Forces Day play a vital role in strengthening connections among Veterans and the community, while underscoring the ongoing need to support those who have served.
“Armed Forces Day is an opportunity to recognize the dedication and sacrifices of all who have worn the uniform,” said Angelyn McCrory, Atlanta VAHCS Chief Veterans Experience Officer. “We are honored to care for Veterans every day and celebrate the strength, resilience, and commitment they continue to demonstrate in their communities.”
Established in 1949, Armed Forces Day honors Americans currently serving in the United States military and recognizes the enduring contributions of service members, Veterans, and military families across the nation.
