Atlanta VAHCS Veterans Reflect on the True Meaning of Memorial Day

For many Americans, Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer, filled with cookouts, family gatherings and time away from work.
But for Veterans who receive care at the Atlanta VA Health Care System, the holiday carries a far deeper meaning rooted in remembrance, sacrifice and reflection.
Army Veteran James Jackson said Memorial Day is a solemn reminder of the brothers and sisters in uniform who never made it home.
“People see the flags and ceremonies, but for Veterans, Memorial Day is personal,” Jackson said. “I think about the friends I served with who gave everything for this country. Their sacrifice should never be forgotten.”
Jackson, who served during Operation Desert Storm, said he spends every Memorial Day visiting a local cemetery to honor fallen service members and reconnect with fellow Veterans.
Marine Corps Veteran Sharon Rogers said the holiday also serves as a time to educate younger generations about the cost of freedom.
“Memorial Day is not just another day off,” Rogers said. “It’s about remembering the men and women who laid down their lives so we could enjoy the freedoms we have today. I always tell my kids that freedom comes with sacrifice.”
Rogers added that receiving care at the Atlanta VAHCS has helped her stay connected with other Veterans who understand the emotional weight Memorial Day can carry.
Navy Veteran Ronald Sims reflected on the importance of unity and gratitude during the holiday.
“I lost shipmates during my years of service, and Memorial Day gives me a chance to pause and honor them,” Sims said. “It’s also a reminder that we should support one another and look after the families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.”
Sims said he appreciates how the Atlanta VA community recognizes and supports Veterans throughout the year, especially during meaningful observances like Memorial Day.
As Memorial Day approaches, these Veterans encourage their neighbors to take a moment to reflect on the true purpose of the holiday and remember those who gave their lives in service to the nation.
