Atlanta VAHCS Women Veterans Program Fosters Connection and Support at Monthly Meet-Up

The Atlanta VA Health Care System Women Veterans Program brought together approximately 25 women Veterans for its monthly meet-up on June 25 at American Legion Post 66.
The event fostered camaraderie, networking, and meaningful conversations about topics relevant to women who have served in the military. Women Veterans from various service eras and branches were welcomed, creating a supportive space for sharing experiences, building relationships, and discovering resources offered by Atlanta VAHCS and local community organizations.
Kathleen O’Loughlin, Atlanta VAHCS Women Veterans Program Manager, said the monthly meet-ups play an important role in helping women Veterans develop meaningful relationships while staying informed about benefits and services available to them.
“These gatherings provide women Veterans with a sense of community and belonging,” O’Loughlin said. “Many women leave military service and miss the connections they had while serving. Our monthly meet-ups help foster those relationships while ensuring women Veterans are aware of the health care, benefits, and support services available through VA and our community partners.”
Participants engaged in informal discussions about health and wellness, military experiences, career transitions, and resources designed to support women Veterans throughout their lives.
Army Veteran Linda Roberts said she appreciates the opportunity to connect with other women who understand the unique challenges and rewards of military service.
“Being around other women Veterans reminds me that our experiences matter and that we are stronger when we support one another,” Roberts said. “The friendships and connections made at these gatherings help create a network of encouragement and understanding that extends far beyond the meeting itself.”
Air Force Veteran Sharon Jones echoed those sentiments, noting that the monthly meet-ups provide valuable information while strengthening bonds among women Veterans.
“These events are a great way to learn about resources and programs that can improve our quality of life,” Jones said. “Just as important, they give us a chance to share our stories and support one another. It’s empowering to be surrounded by women who have served and understand the journey.”
The monthly meetings take place on the fourth Wednesday of each month at the American Legion Post 66, located at 30 Covington Road, Avondale Estates, GA, from 10 AM until noon. This consistent schedule allows women Veterans to plan ahead and ensures everyone can participate in these meaningful gatherings.
