Atlanta Veteran Remembers U.S. Coast Guard’s 235th Anniversary

August 4 marks the 235th anniversary of the founding of the United States Coast Guard—one of the nation’s oldest continuous seagoing services.
Established in 1790 by Alexander Hamilton as the Revenue Cutter Service, the Coast Guard has evolved into a critical component of the nation’s homeland security and maritime safety, according to one Atlanta VA Health Care System Veteran.
Alfred Jones says he often takes time to reflect on his service in the Coast Guard and its proud history. Jones notes that from patrolling the seas to responding to natural disasters and conducting life-saving rescues, Coast Guard personnel have remained “Semper Paratus”—Always Ready.
“I joined the Coast Guard right out of high school and served for over 25 years,” Jones said. “We weren’t always in the spotlight, but we were always there when our nation needed us.”
Today, the Coast Guard operates with more than 40,000 active-duty members, 7,000 reservists, and thousands of civilian personnel, protecting U.S. coastlines and inland waterways, enforcing laws, and assisting in times of national emergency.
The Atlanta VAHCS honors the legacy and contributions of Coast Guard Veterans on this historic anniversary and remains committed to supporting their health and well-being long after their military service ends.
Happy 235th Birthday, U.S. Coast Guard—your courage, commitment, and service are never forgotten.
