Atlanta Veterans celebrate Army Birthday

By Gregory Kendall, Public Affairs Specialist

The US Army will commemorate its 250th birthday on June 14, 2025, marking a significant milestone in its storied history.

The theme for this year's celebration is This We'll Defend, a motto that underscores the Army's enduring commitment to the nation since its establishment on June 14, 1775.  For many Veterans, this day is a time to pause and honor one of the oldest and most trusted institutions in the country.

Terry Trotter, a 73-year-old Vietnam War Veteran, fondly recalled his participation in the annual Army tradition of a unit’s oldest and youngest Soldiers cutting an Army birthday cake together with a ceremonial sword. “There is a lot of pride in celebrating the Army's birthday because it highlights the sacrifices and dedication of the men and women who have served and continue to serve our great nation,” Trotter said.

Retired Sgt. 1st Class Ronald Jackson, who served in the Army for 20 years, explained why June 14 should be considered the most patriotic day of the year. “Not only is it the Army's birthday, but it's also Flag Day,” he observed.  “I don't think it's a coincidence that the date of the founding of our first military branch and the founding of our country’s most powerful symbol of freedom is one and the same.”

Jackson summed up the sentiments of many Veterans. “The unity and camaraderie in the Army and the other branches of the Armed Forces is hard to explain,” he said. “Serving makes you part of a brotherhood/sisterhood that last a lifetime. So, no matter where you find yourself in life, you can connect with others who served.

Both Veterans noted that the Army has a long history, and celebrating its birthday is just one of the many traditions Soldiers take pride in.
