Atlanta Veterans Celebrate Marine Corps 250th Anniversary
By Gregory Kendall, Public Affairs Specialist
This year marks a truly historic milestone as the United States Marine Corps (USMC) celebrates its 250th anniversary on November 10, 2025 — commemorating two and a half centuries of valor, discipline, and unwavering dedication to our nation.
For two Atlanta VA Health Care System Veterans, the Corps’ birthday is more than a date on the calendar — it’s a time to reflect on lifelong bonds, shared values, and the enduring motto: Semper Fidelis — Always Faithful.
“When you swore that oath, you became part of something bigger than yourself,” said retired Master Gunnery Sergeant Joseph McGee, who receives care through Atlanta VAHCS. “Now, 250 years later, that same sense of honor, courage and commitment still holds us together.”
For Danny Jones, who enlisted in the Marine Corps after graduating from high school, the milestone carries a sense of duty and reflection. “When I heard that the Marine Corps would mark 250 years, I thought of all the Marines who came before me — and all those who will come after. It’s our job to pass the torch.”
Both Veterans embody the Marine ethos that continues to inspire generations. Their reflections serve as a reminder that while uniforms may be retired, the call to serve — and to uphold the values of honor, courage, and commitment — remains strong.
Jones added that the Marine Corps’ 250th anniversary serves as a reminder that service never ends — it simply takes new forms. “Once a Marine, always a Marine and we continue to look out for one another, carry the torch of camaraderie, and live the words that define us: Semper Fi.”
From all of us at the Atlanta VA Health Care System — thank you for your service, thank you for your sacrifice, and Happy 250th Birthday to the United States Marine Corps!
