Food Connects Us: A Celebration of National Nutrition Month

The atmosphere was filled with camaraderie as Veterans shared their own experiences and ideas for healthier eating.

The Atlanta VA buzzed with excitement as the Annual National Nutrition Month event kicked off, hosted by the dietitians for National Nutrition Month. This year’s theme, “Food Connects Us,” resonated deeply within the community, highlighting the vital connections food creates—nourishment, culture, relationships, and well-being.

The event took place on the 1st floor of the Joseph Maxwell Cleland Atlanta VA, where Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) and Nutrition and Dietetics Technicians, Registered (NDTRs) set up a welcoming table for Veterans. Bright banners adorned the area, showcasing vibrant fruits and vegetables alongside a powerful message about nutrition. 

The dietitians were eager to meet with attendees, discussing healthy eating habits and the importance of nutrition for overall wellness. 

Twanda Cole and Angela Jackson, were two of the many dedicated dietitians, engaged Veterans in meaningful conversations about nutrition. Cole emphasized the importance of community support, stating, "When we come together and share our knowledge, we empower each other to make healthier choices." She also shared her personal mission, saying, “I strive to enrich, empower, and enhance the lives of our Veterans through my skills and efforts by finding meaning and purpose in everything I do. It is always an honor to care and serve those who have served.” 

As Veterans visited the table, they received bags filled with nutrition resources, recipe cards, and tips for maintaining a balanced diet. Jackson highlighted how these interactions were integral to fostering a supportive environment, remarking, "Connecting with Veterans over food and nutrition builds relationships and also enhances their well-being." The atmosphere was filled with camaraderie as Veterans shared their own experiences and ideas for healthier eating. The dietitians provided guidance while encouraging open discussions, creating a sense of community among those who attended. 

The event was a successful outreach effort that not only celebrating National Nutrition Month but also strengthened the connections between nutrition professionals and Veterans. With the theme “Food Connects Us” resonating throughout the day, the dietitians left a lasting impact, inspiring those present to prioritize their nutrition and well-being.
