Honoring Our Families: Celebrating National Veterans & Military Families Month
By Gregory Kendall, Public Affairs Specialist
Each November, the nation honors not only those who served in uniform but also the families who stood beside them through every deployment, homecoming, and transition.
National Veterans & Military Families Month recognizes that military service is a shared commitment — one that touches spouses, children, and loved ones long after active duty ends.
Army Veteran Ray Johnson, who receives care at the Atlanta VA Health Care System, credits his family for helping him adjust to civilian life after years of deployments and moves. “They were my stability when the uniform came off,” he added. “It’s one thing to serve your country, but it’s another to have a family that who serves right alongside you.”
His wife, Janice Johnson, knows that feeling well. “When Ray deployed, I became both mom and dad for our son, held down the home while worrying about his safety, and then welcomed him back after he completed several overseas assignments,” ’she said. “This month is a reminder that I’m part of the service, too.”
Janice said the support they’ve found through the VA and military family support programs have been vital. “What helped was knowing there were resources — community groups, VA, military family support — that weren’t just for ‘when he’s away,’ but for us together now.”
Their son, Mike Johnson, 14, offers a younger perspective on service after military life. “Watching my dad transition from the military to civilian life has been interesting,” he said with a grin. “The uniform may come off, but the values of hard work, service, dedication, and integrity remain present every day.”
The Johnson’s story shines a spotlight on the significant role military families and Veterans’ families play in our nation’s strength and on the quiet sacrifices of those who serve behind the scenes.
As Ray Johnson reflected, “Serving in the Army taught me discipline and duty. But my family taught me strength — the kind that doesn’t come from rank or medals, but from love.”
