“On Dec 7, all Americans should reflect on the lasting impact of that "Day of Infamy" and honor the members of the Greatest Generation for their sacrifice, courage, and indomitable perseverance.”
Honoring Pearl Harbor: Atlanta Veterans Reflect on Remembrance Day
As December 7 approaches, an Atlanta VA Health Care System Veteran plans to honor Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day by visiting the grave of a fallen comrade, taking a moment to reflect on his bravery and sacrifice. For the 2,403 service members and civilians who lost their lives in Hawaii on that fateful morning in 1941, this day serves as an enduring reminder of sacrifice and resilience.
Army Veteran Joseph McGee, who served in the Gulf War, recalled how Pearl Harbor marked a pivotal turning point in history, awakening the nation to the realities of global conflict and the necessity of unity in the face of adversity.
“It’s a day to honor those who gave everything,” said McGee, underscoring the enduring values of courage and service.” McGee noted how the attack on Pearl Harbor, while devastating, inspired unmatched courage and solidarity, shaping the United States’ role as a global leader and influencing generations of service members who followed.
“Peal Harbor was a surprise attack that lasted for a couple of hours and destroyed much of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, including battleships and airplanes” explained McGee. “Our military fought with extreme bravery to save their fellow men and salvage the damaged ships. Subsequently, we declared war on Japan, fully engaging in World War II.”
McGee believes that the annual Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day serves not only as a moment of reflection and gratitude but also as a call to action for this generation. “On Dec 7, all Americans should reflect on the lasting impact of that "Day of Infamy" and honor the members of the Greatest Generation for their sacrifice, courage, and indomitable perseverance.”
