January is National Volunteer Blood Donor Month

By Gregory Kendall, Public Affairs Specialist

January marks National Volunteer Blood Donor Month and highlights the importance of donating blood.

Gwen Ramos, Atlanta VA Healthcare System Center for Development and Civic Engagement (CDCE) chief,  says the goal of the month-long observance is to raise awareness about how blood donation delivers significant benefits to donors and recipients, improves overall health, and ultimately saves lives.  Ramos noted how CDCE regularly partners with community blood collection such as Blood Assurance, Life South, and American Red Cross to host blood drives.

“We want to thank all of our generous donors for their lifesaving gift,” said Ramos. “In the new year, we should all resolve to become regular blood donors and there’s no better time to start than during National Blood Donor Month.”

Army Veteran Kevin Williams who regularly donates blood said he is committed to giving even more in 2025.  “What better way to start the new year than giving blood to give back to my community and make a difference in others' lives,” said Williams, who received a blood transfusion after being wounded while serving in Afghanistan.

The next Atlanta VAHCS mobile Blood Drive is scheduled for March 3, 2025, at 8am with LifeSouth Community Blood Centers. The event will take place at the West Cobb VA Clinic, located 333 Midway Road, Marietta, GA 30064-5630
