Atlanta VAHCS Women Veterans Observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month with Strength and Solidarity

By Gregory Kendall, Public Affairs Specialist

Every October, the nation unites to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month, honoring the survivors, remembering those lost, and raising awareness about early detection and prevention.

At the Atlanta VA Health Care System, female Veterans are marking the month with courage, hope, and a strong message — early detection saves lives.

Army Veteran Donna Jones said she views Breast Cancer Awareness Month as a reminder of the resilience shared among women Veterans. “In the military, we learned to stand strong through every challenge,” Jones said. “That same strength helps us face health battles like breast cancer. The key is not to fight alone — reach out, get screened, and support one another.”

Air Force Veteran Linda Rogers shared that the support she received through the Atlanta VA Health Care System made all the difference. “The doctors and nurses at the Atlanta VA made me feel seen and cared for. They encouraged me to stay proactive about my health — and that’s how my cancer was caught early,” she said.

Atlanta VAHCS provides comprehensive breast health services, including mammography, genetic counseling, oncology referrals, and support groups for Veterans navigating diagnosis and recovery. The program ensures that every woman Veteran has access to the care and community she deserves.

“Breast Cancer Awareness Month reminds us that strength and self-care go hand in hand,” said Kathleen O’Loughlin, Atlanta VAHCS Women Veterans Program Manager. “We’re proud to stand with our women Veterans in promoting education, early detection, and compassionate care.”

Throughout the year, the Atlanta VAHCS Women Veterans Program hosts a series of activities to raise awareness, including educational sessions, survivor panels, and pink ribbon events at the Atlanta VA Medical Center and community-based outpatient clinics. These events highlight the importance of regular mammograms and women’s preventive health screenings, all available through VA care.
