VA physicians and subject matter experts were on hand to answer questions, highlight available services, and listen to feedback directly from attendees.
The Atlanta VAHCS Women Veterans Program hosted its monthly meeting for April recently, bringing together women Veterans from across the community to discuss health care resources, emerging services, and ongoing priorities within the VA health system.
This month’s session focused on providing women Veterans with up-to-date information on preventive care: colon cancer screenings, mental health support, maternity and reproductive health services, and specialty programs tailored to their unique health needs. VA physicians and subject matter experts were on hand to answer questions, highlight available services, and listen to feedback directly from attendees.
“It’s really amazing what we can do with the technology we have now”, communicated Dr. Mechu Narayanan, Gastrointestinal Physician, Medical Specialty, with the Atlanta VA Medical Center. Dr. Narayanan communicated an important fact, that being aware of your family history is very important.
Heidi May, Tai Chi and Chi Gong instructor, introduced Veterans to some basic postures of Tai Chi, and how to coordinate movement with breath. “Today, I wanted to show them different ways of movement coordinated with our breath, showing them how to use the movements to get connected to the ground and practice balance as well as getting connected to the earth, communicated May.
Participants emphasized the value of a dedicated space where women Veterans can share experiences, learn about new benefits, and stay connected with VA providers who understand their needs. Dorothy Johnson, Registered Nurse, and Cervical Cancer Screening Navigator, relayed, “These monthly meetings play a key role in strengthening communication and ensuring that women Veterans are aware of the full range of care options available to them.”
The Women Veterans Program will continue to host meetings each month, with future sessions focusing on topics such as whole health, women’s mental wellness, cancer screenings, and navigating VA care. All women Veterans are encouraged to attend and ask questions, concerns, or suggestions to help shape future discussions.
The Women Veteran Monthly Meet-up meet every 4th Wednesday of the month at the American Legion Post 66, 30 Covington Road, Avondale Estates, Georgia.
