VA Augusta takes bold step forward in its mental health care for Veterans

In a significant move to enhance mental health services for Veterans, VA Augusta Health Care System has announced it began accepting involuntary psychiatric admissions May 5, 2025.
This transition marks a shift from the previous practice of referring all such cases to community facilities and underscores the system's commitment to providing timely, high-quality mental health care within the VA system.
"This decision marks a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to providing comprehensive mental health care for our Veterans," stated Oscar G. Rodriguez, Acting Executive Director of VA Augusta Health Care System. "By accepting involuntary admissions, we are removing barriers and ensuring that Veterans in crisis receive the immediate, Veteran-centered care they deserve."
The new policy ensures that Veterans admitted involuntarily will receive the same recovery-oriented treatment as those admitted voluntarily. VA Augusta’s inpatient psychiatric unit is fully prepared to support this expansion in care.
"Our primary goal is to meet the acute mental health needs of our Veterans with the highest standard of care," emphasized Dr. Dustin Wright, Chief of Mental Health Services at VA Augusta. "This change allows us to provide a seamless continuum of care and maintain the strong partnerships we have with community providers."
Veterans will benefit from reduced wait times and enhanced continuity of care, which are critical components in addressing mental health crises effectively. The initiative also strengthens VA Augusta’s ability to offer support and resources tailored specifically to the unique needs of Veterans.
The commitment to high-quality mental health care remains at the forefront of VA Augusta's services. With this new approach in place VA Augusta is poised to make a meaningful difference in the lives of Veterans and their families, providing them with the support and care they need during their most challenging times.
"This marks a pivotal moment in our mission to serve those who have served our country," added Dr. Wright. "We are proud to be able to offer this level of compassionate, comprehensive care within our own facilities."
