Bay Pines VA Healthcare System, Community Partners Complete Transfer of 146 Veterans Ahead of Hurricane Idalia
PRESS RELEASE
August 30, 2023
BAY PINES , FL — Bay Pines VA Healthcare System has completed the successful transportation of 146 Veterans from the C.W. Bill Young VA Medical Facility today.
“We’re pleased to report that patients from our hospital and residents from the Community Living Center are safe this evening and resting comfortably,” said Bay Pines VA Healthcare System Director and CEO Paul M. Russo. “Today reflects the dedication of our team and community partners to ensure the safety and well-being of America’s heroes.”
Bay Pines VA began coordination with West Palm Beach, Orlando, Tampa, and North Florida/South Georgia VA Medical Centers last night, and by 3:45 this afternoon, the last transport pulled away from Bay Pines VA.
“Hurricanes definitely present challenges for us because our catchment encompasses nearly the entire length of the western side of the state,” said Bay Pines VA Healthcare System Assistant Director and Incident Commander Sean Turner. “However, much like the Veterans we serve, when moments count, this community of concern rises to meet the challenge every time.”
The Florida Department of Veterans Affairs was also integral to the safe transfer of many Veterans from C.W. Bill Young VA Medical Center to the State Veteran’s Home.
“FDVA is an amazing partner who consistently steps forward during critical times to make the impossible possible,” added Russo. “The work behind the scenes, along with their commitment to making Veterans a priority make them a difference maker for our healthcare system and the Veterans we are honored to serve.”
Bay Pines VA leadership is beginning the process of working recovery efforts to receive patients and residents back to the C.W. Bill Young VA Medical Center as soon as it’s safe to do so.
