The Bay Pines VA Healthcare System Acting Assistant Director is Ms. Amy Whitaker.

As part of the leadership team for the nation’s seventh-busiest VA healthcare system, Ms. Whitaker is responsible for overseeing of community-based outpatient operations at eight clinics across southwest Florida. One of these locations includes a highly complex ambulatory care center that provides outpatient medical, surgical, mental health, and sub-specialty care.

Ms. Whitaker joined Bay Pines VA Healthcare System in May 2022 as the Veteran Experience Officer, where she had strategic oversight of the patient experience throughout the healthcare system. She was responsible for the Veteran Experience Office which includes patient advocacy, MyHealtheVet and Patient Relations Assistants. She serves on more than 10 committees and councils, with a primary focus of ensuring compassionate health care is provided to every Veteran we are privileged to serve. 

Her VA career began in 2012 at the Robley Rex VA Medical Center in Louisville, Kentucky, where she served as a social worker in home based and geriatric primary care. She co-chaired the Patient Experience Committee and was promoted to Geriatrics and Extended Care Social Work Supervisor managing six programs. In 2018, she moved to the Tennessee Valley Healthcare System as the Chief Experience Officer.  

Ms. Whitaker has earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work from the University of Kentucky. She holds multiple certifications including Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Kentucky and Florida, Academy of Certified Social Workers (ACSW), and Military Service Members, Veterans and Their Families – Clinical Social Worker (MVF-CSW) and the globally recognized Certified Patient Experience Professional (CPXP) credential. Ms. Whitaker has completed the Beryl Institute’s Certificate of Leadership, VISN 9 Leadership Institute and is a 2024 graduate of VA’s Health Care Leadership Development Program.
