Bedford Patriots Shine at the 2025 Veterans Golden Age Games

By Leanna Lynch, Public Affairs Officer
Five local heroes from the Bedford VA—fondly known as the Bedford Patriots—traveled to Memphis, Tennessee, to compete in the 2025 National Veterans Golden Age Games, joining more than 1,100 veterans in a celebration of fitness, camaraderie, and resilience.
Veterans Bob Surdel, Jack Drinkwater, Jim Tumminelli, Rebecca Blatz, and John Casey represented Bedford proudly, competing across 12 sports and two exhibition events. From cornhole to swimming, every athlete gave it their all against one of the most competitive fields in event history.
Army Veteran Rebecca Blatz, competing in her first Games, made a dazzling debut—winning gold in the 50-meter backstroke and earning first place in archery. She was also one of just 290 women veterans to participate this year, making her achievements even more inspiring. Navy Veteran Jack Drinkwater brought home two bronze medals, in cornhole and the 200-meter track event during this, his third time participating in the Games.
The team, coached by Recreation Therapist Ben Cayes was supported in training by Recreation Therapy Supervisor Andrew Geddry. After training for months to prepare, their dedication paid off not just in medals, but in lifelong memories and new friendships.
From early mornings to packed schedules, none of it would have been possible without the behind-the-scenes support of CDCE, the Fiscal and Business Office, and the driver who got the team to the airport before sunrise.
Though not everyone brought home hardware, all five athletes brought home pride—not just for themselves, but for the entire Bedford VA community. Their spirit, sportsmanship, and determination made this year’s Golden Age Games a golden experience for all.
We salute our Bedford Patriots and look forward to cheering them on again next year!
