Bedford— VA Bedford Healthcare System marked a significant milestone in its commitment to veteran health by hosting its first-ever Overdose Awareness Week at the Crossroads from September 4-6, 2024.

This event, aligning with International Overdose Awareness Day, brought together over 200 Veterans, healthcare providers, and caregivers in a concerted effort to address the critical issue of overdose prevention.

The primary objectives of the event were multifaceted: to combat the stigmatization surrounding addiction, promote effective treatment options, celebrate the journey of recovery, and strengthen collaborative efforts to prevent overdose deaths. The Pain Management Committee played a pivotal role in fostering collaboration among various VA service lines, providing comprehensive information on VA Pain and Mental Health resources, and empowering Veterans to receive naloxone prescriptions and education without fear of judgment.

During the three-day event, healthcare providers successfully issued 25 naloxone orders, highlighting the immediate impact of the initiative in equipping Veterans with this life-saving medication. The success of the Overdose Awareness Week was largely attributed to the seamless cooperation between different specialty and acute care departments. Teams from Veterans Mental Health and Addictions Program, Suicide Prevention, Primary Care Behavioral Health, Pharmacy, Nurse Education, and Peer Specialty all contributed their expertise to create a holistic approach to overdose prevention and treatment.

The event was spearheaded by a dedicated team of professionals, whose efforts were instrumental in its success. The team included Angela Ho, Wesley Alexander, Sasha Barden, Joanna Wong, Tracey Gagnon, Kelcie Duesler, and Jeffrey Moccia, each bringing their unique skills and perspectives to the table.

VA Bedford healthcare providers recognize that in the fight against overdose, every individual action carries significant weight. They remain committed to ongoing collaboration and innovative approaches to save lives. This inaugural Overdose Awareness Week serves as a foundation for future initiatives, reinforcing VA Bedford's dedication to Veteran health and safety throughout the year.
