PRESS RELEASE
October 9, 2024
Birmingham , AL — BIRMINGHAM, AL –Birmingham VA Health Care System (BVAHCS) is offering updated Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines. BVAHCS is also offering updated flu vaccines for the 2024-2025 season.
COVID-19 and flu shots are regularly updated to target more recent virus strains and boost our immunity. If you haven’t had an updated COVID-19 or flu vaccine this season, it is important to get them both as soon as you can.
RSV vaccine is recommended for everyone 75 and older, some pregnant people, and some people 60 and older at high risk. BVAHCS offers Abrysvo. It is currently only one dose. If you’ve already had an RSV vaccine, you don’t need another one this season.
If you are 65 and older, you should also ask whether you’re up to date on your pneumococcal pneumonia vaccine.
All adults should receive one updated 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine dose if it’s been at least 2 months since receiving any older COVID-19 vaccine.
All adults should receive an age-appropriate flu vaccine. People 65 years and older should receive a flu vaccine specifically recommended for them.
COVID-19, flu, and RSV vaccines may be given at the same time. They can also be given separately if you prefer. Getting all of your recommended vaccines is the best way to protect yourself against severe illness or hospitalization from these viruses.
Updated 2024-2025 COVID-19 and flu vaccines are available at no cost for VA health care employees and Veterans receiving care at VA. RSV and pneumococcal shots are available and free for Veterans receiving care at VA. VA is open for appointments and many sites accept walk-ins during hours when vaccine clinics are operational.
