A Century of Service: Guntersville VA Clinic Honors 100-Year-Old Veteran

The Guntersville VA Clinic turned into a place of celebration on December 20, 2024, as staff, family, and friends gathered to honor John Stowe, a Veteran who is reaching a remarkable milestone of 100 years.
Born on Christmas Day in 1924, Stowe has lived a life of dedication, serving in three branches of the U.S. military: the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, and U.S. Air Force, over a 27-year career.
The celebration began with a surprise visit from Santa Claus, who arrived early to greet the birthday guest of honor. Stowe, in his typical humble fashion, asked Santa for only one thing—continued good health. When asked about his secret to longevity, Stowe smiled and said, “Hard work and eating healthy.”
During the party, Stowe captivated the room with stories from his remarkable military career. At just 17, he volunteered to serve during World War II, fulfilling his duty as a cook both overseas and stateside during World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War. Reflecting on the era, he shared, “More people were volunteering back then. It was just what you did—you served your country.”
As local media outlets provided excellent coverage of the celebration, Stowe was presented a certificate expressing VA’s gratitude and heartfelt wishes for continued joy, health, and happiness. He also enjoyed his favorite coconut cake with milk fresh from the farm. The clinic’s staff, who have grown fond of Mr. Stowe over the years, made sure the event was one to remember. “I always get excellent care at the VA,” Stowe remarked. “I’ve heard a few people grumble, but that’s just people who grumble about anything.”
