Nurses Week at the Birmingham VA Health Care System was a cosmic celebration packed with activities, recognition, and moments that highlighted nursing teams throughout.

A Celebration Out of This World

With a facility-wide theme of “Out of This World,” interstellar events could be found at every turn.

Nursing staff were invited to participate in a variety of activities, from themed breakfasts and spirit days to creative contests, professional development fairs, and games that brought smiles to every corner of the facility.

Whether attending a recognition ceremony, taking professional headshots, dropping by the cookout, or participating in late‑night surprises for the nightshift teams, the opportunities to celebrate were limitless.

Messages from Mission Control

Behind the scenes, Birmingham VA Nurse Recruiters Jaci Hogeland, MSN, RN, and Kyla Higgins, BSN, RN, CEN, poured months of planning and dedication into creating the unforgettable week.

“Jaci and I began planning well in advance. We love organizing and providing a special experience each Nurses Week because as nurses ourselves, we understand how challenging it can be,” stated Higgins. “We often meet people on the worst day of their lives; it takes a special person to manage the emotions, challenges, and stress endured while continuing to provide the best care possible. I hope all our nurses feel celebrated and acknowledged.”

“Nurses Week is such a special time at the Birmingham VA, and we are so thankful for the support we receive,” said Hogeland. “We love having the opportunity to celebrate and show appreciation for everything our nurses do. I hope that every nurse feels valued and appreciated.”

When asked which event was their favorite, one soared above the rest.

“Our favorite event this year was the facility game cart tour,” Hogeland happily replied. “It allowed us to reach nurses at the bedside, which offered a fun element of surprise.”

One Small Step for Appreciation, One Giant Leap for Gratitude

The week offered well‑deserved appreciation for the dedication nurses bring to their roles and the extraordinary care they provide. We are grateful for the hope and healing you bring to every corner.

To all nursing staff: thank you. You are the guiding stars that keep the mission on course far beyond this one special week. May it serve as a daily reminder of our gratitude for your immeasurable impact.

You are truly out of this world.
