Birmingham VA Health Care System Receives 5-Star CMS Rating

The Birmingham VA Health Care System was recognized as a 5-star medical center by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, rising from its previous 3-star ranking.
Only two medical centers in the state of Alabama received a five-star ranking, and Birmingham is one of 255 medical centers nationwide to receive this rating. This distinction positions the Birmingham VA as one of the best medical centers nationwide and underscores the system’s commitment to providing high-quality and coordinated health care services to Veterans in central and northern Alabama.
According to Becker’s Hospital Review, 91 fewer hospitals received the five-star designation in 2025 than in 2024.
“This remarkable accomplishment reflects the hard work, dedication, and relentless commitment of our staff to improve the care and services we provide to the Veterans we serve,” said Birmingham VA Executive Director/CEO Dr. Oladipo Kukoyi. “Veterans deserve the best, and this rating confirms that is what they receive through our health care system.”
The CMS star ratings focus on several key domains, including patient safety, readmission and mortality rates, patient experience, and timely and effective care.
The Birmingham VA Medical Center has 11 clinics in central and northern Alabama, including its main hospital, which features over 100 beds in Birmingham. Additionally, the system serves over 71,000 Veterans throughout 24 counties.
