Birmingham VA: CAVC & Cumberland Law Celebrate Legal Support for Alabama Veterans
For the second year, the Central Alabama Veterans Collaborative (CAVC) recognized law students from Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law for their dedication and service to Veterans.
Throughout the 2024–2025 academic year, these students provided crucial legal support through the Cumberland Veterans Legal Assistance Clinic (C-VETS), assisting Veterans and their families with a range of civil and criminal matters.
At a recent event, CAVC leadership and advocates for Veterans gathered to honor the students with trophy awards for their commitment. Among those in attendance was Ahmad Brewer, the Birmingham VA Health Care System’s Homeless Veterans Program Coordinator and former Veterans Justice Outreach Officer.
“It’s been an honor to represent the VA at this event and to witness firsthand the impact of the legal services provided by Cumberland’s students,” Brewer said. “These future attorneys bring compassion, skill, and professionalism to every case, and their support has been vital for Veterans facing legal hurdles that often stand in the way of housing, employment, or benefits.”
Since its founding in 2020, C-VETS has served nearly 900 Veteran clients—including more than 250 in the past year alone. The clinic has become a lifeline for Veterans across Alabama by offering services through partnerships with organizations like the Birmingham Bar Volunteer Lawyers Program’s Veterans Help Desk.
The clinic assists with civil matters such as consumer debt, landlord-tenant disputes, uncontested family law issues, and wills; limited criminal matters including expungement and driver license issues; and support with discharge upgrades—an essential service for Veterans seeking access to benefits and care tied to their military status.
