The holiday season can be a challenging time for Veterans who are in the process of rebuilding their lives. However, the simple act of sharing a meal can restore dignity, comfort, and hope.

This year, the Birmingham VA Health Care System’s Health Care for Homeless Veterans program assembled 100 holiday meal boxes for Veterans enrolled in the HUD-VASH program. Each box was carefully prepared with a choice of turkey, ham, or roasting chicken, along with all the ingredients needed for a traditional holiday meal. These boxes represent more than just food; they symbolize care, support, and a sense of home for those who have served our country and are now working toward stability and permanent housing.

The initiative is a collaboration with the HUB Community Development Corporation and its food pantry, ensuring that Veterans who once served our nation will enjoy a warm holiday meal. This effort reassures them that their community stands with them, especially during the holiday season.

“These boxes are packed and ready, and today, Emmanuel Transportation delivered a tractor-trailer filled with frozen meats traditionally found on the holiday table,” said Ahmad Brewer, Homeless Veteran Program Coordinator. “Together, Birmingham VA and the HUB are providing 100 holiday meals to Veterans in HUD-VASH. It’s about serving those who served and offering a helping hand during a season when it matters the most.”

Now in its fourth year of support, the HUB Community Development Corporation continues to demonstrate what community action looks like—meeting Veterans where they are and ensuring their holidays are filled with warmth instead of worry.
