On May 20, almost 200 people came together under sunny spring skies for the Birmingham VA Health Care System’s 16th Annual VA2K Walk and Roll. The event focused on wellness, building community, and supporting Veterans who are experiencing homelessness.

Veterans, VA staff, caregivers, volunteers, and community members brought energy to the campus as they took part in the 2K walk. Birmingham’s VA2K theme, “Freedom 250: Serving those who served,” celebrated both America’s upcoming 250th anniversary and the VA’s ongoing support for Veterans.

The Birmingham VA event was one of approximately 100 VA2K events held at VA facilities nationwide.

After the walk, everyone came together for a community resource fair with information about VA health care, enrollment, wellness programs, and support for Veterans. Music, games, and wellness activities made the event fun and welcoming, encouraging healthy habits and social connections.

Besides promoting physical activity, the VA2K is also an annual effort to help homeless Veterans by collecting donations like personal care items, household supplies, paper products, backpacks, and other essentials.

Organizers said, “The VA2K is more than just a walk. It’s a chance to bring Veterans, employees, and the community together, raise awareness about Veteran homelessness, and encourage healthy living.”

The Birmingham VA Health Care System is grateful to all the participants, volunteers, and community partners who made the event possible, along with local media for helping spread the word about the VA’s mission and impact.

The coverage from Birmingham VA’s local broadcast partners, including WBRC FOX6 News is appreciated.
