PRESS RELEASE

November 16, 2022

BOSTON , MA — A VA Boston Healthcare System psychologist was presented with the Robert S. Laufer Award for Outstanding Scientific Achievement Thursday, Nov. 10, 2022, during the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies annual meeting in Atlanta, Ga.

This award is given to an individual or group who has made an outstanding contribution to research in the field of traumatic stress.

Dr. Brian Marx, a VA Boston HCS clinical psychologist, deputy director of the Behavioral Science Division of VA’s National Center for PTSD, and professor of psychiatry at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, was presented the award for advancing the field of trauma psychology through his research and clinical work, as well as his mentorship of young psychologists pursuing academic careers.

“Brian’s work in the assessment, treatment and understanding of traumatic stress is at the top of his field,” said Dr. Terence Keane, chief of research at VA Boston, director of the Behavioral Science Division of the National Center for PTSD, and assistant dean for research at the Chobanian & Avedisian SOM. “We’re deeply pleased with his many contributions and for helping make both VA Boston and Boston University hubs of excellence in this incredibly important research.”

While stress is common after a trauma, some people relive a traumatic event in their minds. They may also feel distant from friends and family, and experience anger that does not go away over time. These issues can indicate a medical condition called posttraumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. VA offers evidence-based treatments for PTSD at more than 200 programs across the country, including VA Boston HCS. Veterans who have a VA primary care provider, can ask them about treatment and support for PTSD. Veterans who don’t have a VA primary care provider, or who have never been seen in a VA hospital or clinic, can call 800-827-1000 or visit https://www.va.gov/health-care/health-needs-conditions/mental-health/ptsd/ for more information.
