Thomas A. Steinbrunner (Col, USAF, Ret) was appointed as the Interim Executive Director of the VA Caribbean Healthcare System (VACHS) on July 1, 2024.

Mr. Steinbrunner (Col, USAF, Ret) brings over 41 years of military and federal leadership experience the VA Caribbean Healthcare System. In this role, he supports our Nation's Veterans in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.  Before this assignment, he served as the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Alaska VA Healthcare System, which delivered healthcare services at 9 locations for 36,000 enrolled veterans throughout Alaska.  

Mr. Steinbrunner completed a 34-year military career in 2017.  During this period, he served in leadership positions at several medical treatment facilities, in deployed military operations, and at the regional, Air Force, and Department of Defense levels.  In addition, he led multi-national humanitarian missions providing healthcare to medically underserved populations in Haiti, Guatemala, and the Dominican Republic.  He served as a member of the Air Force Medical Service Corps Senior Council.  In his final Air Force assignment, Mr. Steinbrunner was the Hospital Administrator for the Air Force's 2nd largest Medical Center.   

He was awarded numerous military awards, including the Legion of Merit, three Defense Meritorious Service Medals, and five Meritorious Service Medals.  In 2006, he was named the Air Force Space Command Senior Healthcare Administrator of the Year.   He is board-certified in healthcare management and a fellow at the American College of Healthcare Executives.
