CAVHCS Team Demonstrates Excellence in Veteran Care Coordination
The Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System (CAVHCS) recently received high praise for its outstanding collaboration and commitment to Veteran care.
In a time-sensitive case involving a Veteran with a complex medical history, including traumatic brain injury (TBI), the staff partnered with colleagues across the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Department of Defense (DoD), Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC), and the State of Alabama to ensure timely and effective treatment.
The effort began late Friday evening when urgent concerns were raised regarding the Veteran’s need for specialized care. Teams mobilized quickly—even working through the weekend—to develop a coordinated plan. At the forefront of this success was Ms. Michaela Ligon, whose exceptional service was commended by Ms. Selina Doncevic, VA Rehabilitation Nurse Liaison.
In her message to CAVHCS leadership, Ms. Doncevic wrote:
“My work with Michaela today was efficient, excellent, and successful for that Veteran. Michaela and I shared our own skills and best practices, as well as new information to secure a proper consult, referral, and authorization—within approximately two hours. INCREDIBLE WORK! This is exactly what the current VA Secretary seeks—efficiency and access to care—with excellent and transparent communication. This is also a wonderful example of the VA and DoD partnering for care.”
Additional team members who contributed to this effort include Kittra T. Owens, Randall W. Weaver, Stephen E. Sheets, Jenniffer Lapointe, and Paul M. Jordan. Their combined expertise and dedication exemplify the VA’s mission to provide timely, coordinated care for Veterans.
The impact of this collaboration was recognized by the State Director of TBI Programs, who stated:
“I wanted to reach out and thank you and your staff for the quick communication and partnership since Friday. All parties worked together to form a path to get the Veteran admitted. Please let everyone know this was a win for this Veteran and his family.”
This achievement reflects the power of teamwork and the unwavering commitment of VA and DoD professionals to ensure Veterans receive the care they deserve. It stands as a model of efficiency, transparency, and partnership in action.
