Dr. Wessel Meyer was named Chief of Staff at VA Central California Health Care System (VACCHCS) effective November 2, 2025.

This marks his second tenure in this leadership role. He had been serving as Acting Chief of Staff in August 2024. In this capacity he serves as the senior medical executive, overseeing all clinical operations and ensuring the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care. He provides leadership for the medical staff, coordination of interdisciplinary services, and ensure compliance with healthcare regulations and VA policies. He also plays a key role in strategic planning, resource allocation, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement to meet the needs of Veterans.

Dr Meyer completed his Internal Medicine training and Chief Residency at the University of Kansas in 1997. In 1998, Dr Meyer started his VA career at the Leavenworth VA, where he was appointed as the Associate Chief of Staff for Education followed by the Chief of the Primary Care Service Line for Eastern Kansas Health Care system. In 2006 he was appointed as the Chief of Medicine and then Deputy Chief of Staff at the Kansas City VA Medical Center. 

In 2009 he became the Chief of Staff at VACCHCS and oversaw the growth of the health care system from a level 2 to Level 1c complexity level. He also served for 14 months as acting Medical Center Director during the VA wait time crisis and in 2019 became the facility Associate Chief of Staff for Education, Chief Health Informatics Officer and the VISN 21 Academic Affiliations Officer. 

Dr Meyer has championed numerous clinical improvements aimed at improving mortality, inpatient flow, in-hospital complications, reducing clinic wait times, telehealth implementation, leading to national recognition, and expansion VACCHCS’s clinical services during his tenure. 

Dr. Meyer is a member of VA Executive Career Field Class of 2008 and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Clinical Informatics and a full clinical professor in the Department of Medicine at UCSF-Fresno.
