Dr. Fernandez is a provider with the Ralph H. Johnson VA Health Care System.

Dr. Valerian Fernandes graduated from St. John's Medical College, Bangalore in 1989 and did his M.D. (Internal Medicine) from Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) Chandigarh, India. He received his MRCP (Member of Royal College of Physicians-UK) degree in 1994.  He completed his internal medicine residency at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester in 1997 and his cardiology and interventional cardiology fellowship at the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston in 2001. Since then, he has been on the MUSC and RHJ VA Medical Center faculty roster. He is currently Professor of Medicine at MUSC and Chief of Cardiology at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center. 
Dr. Fernandes is board certified in Cardiovascular disease,  Interventional cardiology, Echocardiography and  Nuclear Cardiology. As a nationally recognized Interventionalist, Dr. Fernandes specializes in complex coronary interventions, rotational atherectomy, alcohol septal ablation, mechanical cardiac support and pulmonary embolism therapies. He is the only certified percutaneous mitral valvuloplasty practitioner in the state of South Carolina. 
Dr. Fernandes has been a principal investigator in several trials and has also co-authored multiple publications. He is very active in teaching and medical education and has received many teaching awards and nominations. He is a reviewer for medical and cardiology journals and is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology.
