For Veterans at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Health Care System, getting to and from appointments can be one of the biggest barriers to care. That’s where Kaira Bailem makes all the difference.

Kaira is a transportation assistant who has spent the last seven years ensuring Veterans make it to and from their appointments safely and on time. Whether she’s coordinating rides, fixing routing issues, or simply walking someone through the process, Kaira approaches every interaction with patience, professionalism, and pride.

I schedule and take orders from Veterans trying to acquire transportation to and from their appointments, she explained. No matter what, I work hard. My Veterans will always vouch for me because I know I go over and beyond in my duties every single day.

That dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. Veterans regularly share stories of how Kaira has made a stressful situation manageable and how her support made the difference in getting the care they needed. “Kaira was kind and most helpful with acclimating me to the transportation system. Very, very professional,” said one Veteran. Another shared, “Lyft made multiple mistakes, and Kaira fixed them all within seconds.” One more added, “She was extremely helpful. She even made it easier to call to schedule rides.”

For Kaira, it’s about more than logistics. It’s about honoring those who have served. “To all our Veterans, we do honor you and appreciate your service,” she said. “We are here to care for you. Our pride comes from that.”

She finds joy in the simple things, like a grateful smile or a moment of relief. “Just seeing a smile makes them want to come back and receive further care through our Charleston VA,” she said. “And that’s what it’s all about.”

Kaira’s dedication and heart for service make her a standout example of the mission and values of the Ralph H. Johnson VA HCS. We are proud to recognize her as July’s Ambassador of Excellence.
