At the Ralph H. Johnson VA Health Care System, teamwork is more than a concept. It is a daily commitment.

In the Pain and Surgical Gynecology Clinics, Melissa Davis and Christina Allen, both Advanced Medical Support Assistants, have turned that commitment into a partnership rooted in compassion, humor and trust. Together, they bring comfort to Veterans during some of their most difficult moments, earning praise for their kindness, professionalism and dedication.

“They are both phenomenal, helpful, kind and super professional. The VA needs more people like them,” one Veteran shared. Another added, “They are very positive and helpful. They made my morning today.” Others described Melissa and Christina as “super friendly,” “thoughtful,” and “amazing with scheduling.”

Melissa and Christina take pride in creating an atmosphere where Veterans feel seen, respected and cared for. “Coming to the doctor is never fun,” Christina said. “People get upset in the clinics we work in, especially the GYN clinic, because it is oncology. We try to make Veterans laugh, have fun, dance and enjoy their appointment instead of being scared.”

Melissa, who is also a Veteran, said that connection is what drives her. “As a Veteran, to take care of another Veteran is the best feeling,” she said. “They trust me to make sure they get where they need to be and get the best care possible. That trust means everything.”

Both women believe small gestures make the biggest difference. When Veterans come in on their birthdays, they make sure it does not go unnoticed. “We will sing the worst version of Happy Birthday you have ever heard,” Melissa said with a laugh. “But it is worth it. We want them to know we see them and care about them.”

Their dedication often involves going beyond their primary duties. Melissa and Christina regularly take extra steps to ensure Veterans have everything they need. They call other departments, confirm orders and track down missing information so that no detail is overlooked. “When nobody else wants to do it, we tackle it,” Christina said. “We make sure it gets done.”

Their partnership has developed into an unspoken rhythm. “I can look at her and she knows if I have done something or not,” Melissa said. “We do not have to say anything to each other.” Christina calls Melissa her “Lucy to my Ethel,” comparing their partnership to the iconic friendship from “I Love Lucy.”

The two share laughter, mutual respect and a shared purpose that anchors their work. “We are together more than we are with our families,” Christina said. “But we love what we do. We care deeply about our Veterans, and we care about each other. That is what makes it work.”

For their compassion, teamwork and dedication to providing an exceptional experience for Veterans, Melissa Davis and Christina Allen are recognized as the Ralph H. Johnson VA Health Care System’s November Ambassadors of Excellence.
