Ambassadors of Excellence: Sorfrondia “Sophie” Thompson

For Veterans entering the emergency room, Sorfrondia “Sophie” Thompson is one of the first faces they see and one of the strongest advocates they have.

Sophie serves as an emergency room technician, where she supports triage, assists nurses and providers, and ensures Veterans receive timely and compassionate care. Her role requires quick thinking, strong communication and a steady presence in high-pressure situations.

“I love advocating for Veterans,” Sophie said. “Sometimes they don’t know what they qualify for or what resources are available. I try to help them not just in the emergency room, but beyond that.”

That commitment is deeply personal. Sophie’s grandfather, a Veteran of both the Korean War era and Vietnam, received care at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Health Care System before he passed away. His experience continues to shape the way she approaches her work today.

“I always try to emulate the same compassionate care that was given to him,” she said.

Sophie is known throughout the hospital for her energy and willingness to help wherever needed. Whether she is assisting in the emergency room, supporting clinic staff or helping Veterans navigate services like travel and transportation, she is constantly moving to meet the needs of those she serves.

“I do a lot for the Veterans because a lot of them don’t know we have other resources,” she said. “I’ll go to different departments, find contacts, and make sure they get what they need.”

Her impact is felt by both Veterans and her coworkers. One colleague described her as someone who not only delivers excellent care but also helps patients feel at ease during difficult moments. “She spends time with our Veterans, listens to their concerns and helps calm their fears,” the coworker said. “She is also very good at recognizing when a patient’s condition is changing and making sure the care team knows right away.”

Veterans consistently recognize Sophie’s dedication. “Sorfrondia went above and beyond in providing exceptional personal care,” one Veteran shared. Another said, “She went the extra mile in helping me.” Others highlighted her friendly approach and commitment, describing her as someone who provides “great customer service” and truly cares about Veterans.

For Sophie, the relationships she builds are what matter most. Veterans often recognize her when they return, remembering her energy and kindness.

“I’m always happy and energetic,” she said. “When they come back, they remember me. That means a lot.”
